Venice is a very interesting city to visit. It is made up of about 100 islands that
are connected by hundreds of bridges. In the main part of Venice, cars,
trucks, buses, motorcycles, and bicycles are not allowed. The only way to get
around is by walking or by water. The Grand Canal winds through the center
of Venice.
Instead of buses, people
travel around on boats
called vaporetti that
provide public transit and
move from stop to stop
along the Grand Canal and
around Venice.
A very nice, but fairly expensive way, to enjoy Venice is to take a ride on a
gondola. A gondola is a boat that a gondolier moves through the water by
using one long oar. The shape of a gondola is slightly curved or else it would
go around in circles because the oar only strokes from one side of the boat.
