Versailles was the residence of French kings for about
100 years until the French Revolution in 1789. Louis
XIV was the first French king to live at Versailles and
he was followed there by Louis XV and Louis XVI with
his wife Marie-Antoinette.
On the day I visited Versailles, in May 1999, I had the good
fortune of being there at a time when the fountains were
running. In the picture above, notice the woods bordering the
lakes. The trees were seriously damaged by high winds
accompanying a storm in late December 1999. To the right is
one of the paths through the palace grounds.
In addition to the fountains and forests, there are
beautiful gardens at Versailles. In the picture at the
right, I'm overlooking a fountain that shoots water from
animals' mouths.
