Istanbul was founded more than 2,600 years ago. The city is located on
two continents, the western portion in Europe and the eastern portion in Asia. The Bosphorus Strait separates the two portions of the city and connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. |

This is a view across Istanbul's harbor towards the
Golden Horn. The Topkapi Palace as well as the domes and minarets of St. Sophia's and the Blue Mosque can be seen in the distance. |

There is a lot of ship traffic going through Istanbul's harbor. Oil tankers
go from the Black Sea towards the Mediterranean, freighters and military vessels going in and out of the Bosphorus are plentiful as well. In addition, numerous ferry boats criss-cross the harbor connecting the European and Asian portions of Istanbul. After riding in taxi cabs in Istanbul, ferry boats might be a good way to travel because it seemed that traffic lights were only suggestions that were not necessarily obeyed. |
