When I arrived in Amsterdam, I was surprised to see so many canals. It
seemed as though most streets ran along canals.
Houses in Amsterdam are three or four stories high and narrow. If you look
closely at the picture, you can see that each house has a pulley above the top
window that is used to lift furniture in or out of the houses. Furniture is
moved that way because the stairs in the houses are too narrow and steep to
carry furniture to the upstairs rooms.
