To protect the palace from earthquakes, ancient builders
attempted to make the building earthquake proof. Notice
that the pillars are wider at the top than at the bottom. They
were fitted into their supports with air space beneath them to
lessen the effects of vibration from earthquakes.
These large containers were
used to store olive oil. Ropes
could be put through the loops
to help move them around.
In the frescos on the palace's
walls, men are portrayed with red
skin because they worked outside.
Women would be portryed with
lighter skin because they usually
worked indoors.
