My next stop was Olympia. In the 8th century B.C., the Olympic Games were
started here. Even if the various city-states were at war, they would declare a
truce so that every four years the Olympics could be held. The site was also
used by the ancient Greeks to worship their greatest god and goddess, Zeus and
Hera.
This is the ceremonial area in Olympia where the Olympic
torch is lit by sunlight (using a parabolic mirror) prior to
each Olympiad.
Through the arch is the entrance to the original Olympic
Stadium. 40,000 spectators could sit on the slopes
around the stadium to watch the competition. You can
even run a lap in the stadium if you want.
